Civil War Artifact and Weapon Display

On Saturday, October 1st, from 11am-3pm, the Reddick Mansion will have two of the area’s largest personal collections of Civil War artifacts and weaponry on display. Bob Deipen of Seneca has been collecting Civil War artifacts for many years. His weapons collection includes saddle guns, pocket pistols and naval guns from the Civil War.  On display, he will have one of only a thousand rifles issued to the Union Navy during the War.   His collection also includes cannon balls, swords, and bayonets.  Diepen will also display two sets of slave shackles and slave identification artifacts. Wallace Memorial Weekend, entitled “La Salle County at Peace: The Public & Soldiers Speak,” will include several new events this year and a new encampment location at Pitstick Pavilion, in Ottawa, IL. WHL Wallace – The Dickey Family Cemetery tours

The Dickey Family Cemetery is located on a small plot of landlocked space in unincorporated north Ottawa, IL. It was set aside from a large landholding of T. Lyle Dickey to the west of his home, Valleyview for his family’s final resting place. It was set aside in the early 1840’s and the first known burial was that of his 5 year old daughter Mary Jane in 1842. This was followed by another 5 year old daughter Kitty Emma in 1853. Dickey, himself was a highly respected Ottawa Lawyer and circuit judge, later to become a Supreme Court Justice. His …continue reading

Friday, September 19th through Sunday, September 21st will be the third Annual General W. H. L. Wallace Memorial Weekend, entitled “Civil War ‘64,” will include several new events this year and a new encampment location at Fox River Park, in Ottawa, IL.   This year’s new events will include two battle re-enactments, wandering musicians, coopering and blacksmith demonstrations, a vintage base ball game, and two very pertinent program speakers, Amanda Fesperman and John Heider.
